The Word Became Flesh—Sowing Care for the Nations

Formed with the mission of making the Word of God known to all, The Bible Society of Singapore (BSS) will commemorate 183 years of furthering the Bible Mission this 2020. 

In commemoration of 183 years of missional work, BSS will be organising a 3-part virtual series—in lieu of the annual Bible Mission Banquet.

Brother Mohan C. Lazarus, Board Member of Jesus Redeems Ministry

Brother Mohan C. Lazarus was brought up in a staunchly religious family and caused him to detest Christianity. While he was in his early teens, he was diagnosed with an unknown heart ailment that made him bedridden. But through the prayer of one devout Christian, he was miraculously healed. The healing convicted him of God’s unfathomable compassion, compelling him to invite Jesus into his life. From then on, he devoted his time to minister to the needs of people, especially those suffering from sickness and pain. Known for his passionate prayer life, he founded Jesus Redeems Ministry, where he is currently a board member and staff worker.

Rev Bayarmagnai Bayardalai

Rev Bayarmagnai Bayardalai is the Executive Director of the Mongolian Union Bible Society. He became a Christian in 1998, and has since dedicated himself to serving His Kingdom. In 2004, he was appointed as a pastor in a local church, and graduated from Union Bible Training Center (UBTC) in 2009. He has been serving in the Mongolian Union Bible Society since 2012.

Mr Pablo Gutierrez

Mr Pablo Gutierrez is the Executive Director of the Peruvian Bible Society. Prior to taking up the position of Executive Director, he served as Project Director and Distribution Director, and has faithfully served the Bible Mission for more than 20 years. He is also an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Pueblo Libre.

Ms Dina Katanacho

Ms Dina Katanacho is the Director of The Arab-Israeli Bible Society (AIBS) and is also a Palestinian Arab-Israeli ministry leader. Since joining AIBS in 2008, she has led many projects empowering women to serve God, and advocating family-oriented ministries. She has previously co-authored two books and is currently the editor of a family magazine "Whispers from the Creator to the Family".

Bishop Philip Adhikary

Bishop Philip Adhikary is the Chairman of the Bangladesh Bible Society, the Christian College of Theology in Bangladesh and the Talitha Koumi. He is also known for his role as an evangelist, Bible distributor and church planter, and is also dedicated to improving the quality of life for the marginalised communities. His most recent efforts include providing humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

Faith Conversations on Servant Leadership with Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Pastors and Christian Leaders. Mr Tan Chuan-Jin currently serves as Speaker of Parliament. He is a man of faith, and has frequently spoken openly about his faith in the public sphere. 

He has spent 25 years serving in the Singapore Armed Forces as a Brigadier General. In his present capacity as a government and community leader, Mr Tan is deeply involved with assisting the underprivileged, and an advocate for community care. Throughout his service in various ministries, he has worked to champion many social causes and communities in need. 

While serving as the Minister for Social and Family Development, he launched various initiatives to care for the needy and disadvantaged in Singapore, such as KidStart and SG Cares. 

As the President of the Singapore National Olympic Council, he has played a significant role in leading and inspiring Singapore’s athletes. 

He also works closely with Hope Initiative Alliance through their programmes to raise funds for the needy, and care for the guest workers in need. Most recently, during the circuit breaker, he was involved in the distribution of care meals and other essential supplies to guest workers.

On the 24 June inaugural session ‘Faith Conversations on Servant Leadership’, Mr Tan will be speaking on the topics of Leadership, Community Service, Bible and Faith. Christian Leaders will also be praying for him, for the government, as well as the upcoming election.


Trauma Healing – Initial Equipping

Trauma is part of the human experience in a broken world. It can arise when one is overwhelmed with intense fear, helplessness and horror. It can stem from personal issues, such as the loss of a loved one or divorce; from large-scale devastation like natural disaster or from global crisis such as COVID-19 pandemic. Trauma destroys hope, shatters dignity and isolates one from self, others and God.

How does one recover from trauma? Can the Bible help? What can the Church do?

Trauma Healing (from Trauma Healing Institute of the American Bible Society) is our response to these questions by combining proven mental health practices with the wisdom of the Bible to bring restoration and hope to the broken-hearted. In God’s Word, trauma survivors can encounter the resurrection power of Christ.

Sower Institute for Biblical Discipleship, in partnership with Trauma Healing Institute (THI), aims to provide leadership and services to churches and organisations using God’s word to bring healing and restoration to trauma survivors.

THI’s trauma healing programme provides basic mental health concepts with a biblical framework, using Scripture passages and composite real-life stories to help traumatised people connect the teaching with their circumstances.

Topics Covered
  • If God loves us, why do we suffer?
  • How can the wounds of our hearts be healed?
  • What happens when someone is grieving?
  • Taking your pain to the cross
  • How can we forgive others?
  • How can churches minister amidst various causes of trauma (domestic violence, suicide, etc.)?
  • How can we live as Christians amidst conflict?
  • Looking ahead


How the Programme Works
The programme consists of four components: Part I, a Practicum, Part II and a competency-based assessment.

1. Part I: Initial Equipping Session. Candidates attend a 3.5 day Initial Equipping session which allows participants to: explore their own trauma and bring it to Christ for healing; experience participatory learning; learn basic biblical and mental health principles related to trauma care; and develop plans for using what they have learned in their community. Trauma healing facilitators aim to ‘do no harm’ to those they help. To this end, participants are evaluated through a simple test.

2. Practicum. Participants return to their communities and apply what they have learned. They need to teach the five core lessons at least twice to groups of at least three people and send in reports on their activities.

3. Part II: Advanced Equipping Session. This 3-day session (conducted 6 or 9 months after the Initial Equipping session) focuses on consolidating the facilitator’s competencies in view of their practicum experience.

4. Competency-based assessment. Participants will be certified when they demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Able to manage personal well-being.
  • Able to work on a team.
  • Able to help traumatised people (listening, confidentiality, and so on).
  • Able to lead groups in a participatory way.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the content.

5. Certification and Deployment. At the end of the advanced session, participants are awarded a Certificate of Participation, or, for those who qualify, a facilitator-in-training Certificate. For some, these certificates may be awarded later when the competencies have been acquired.


Who should attend?
This programme is intended for Christians who would like to explore becoming a trauma healing facilitator so that they can provide basic care for those wounded by trauma and loss, or train others to do so.

Requirements:

  • Able to teach others in a community.
  • Able to attend all of the sessions.

About the Trainer

Belinda Ng

Belinda Ng has been a missionary with Serving In Mission (SIM) since 1977. After 12 years in Niger, she served as Personnel Director with SIM East Asia for 16 years. Since then she serves as Member Care and MK Education Consultant in the International Office before returning to Singapore to continue with this role in the Pastoral Care team in SIM East Asia.

Carol Lim Seok Lin

Carol has a passion to serve God through helping people with challenges lead a more meaningful life. Trained as a special needs educator and equipped with a Masters in Special Education, she has more than three decades of experience in Singapore and overseas.

A nurse turned pastor, Mei Ming was formerly the Minister of Cell Groups at the International Baptist Church and also the Associate Pastor of Leng Kwang Baptist Church. She is currently serving at Ang Mo Kio Methodist Church.

About the Trainer

Jessica Ariela is a Master Facilitator with Trauma Healing Institute. Jessica holds a license as professional counsellor in Illinois. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), Indonesia, and her master’s degree from Wheaton College, IL, in Clinical Mental Health Counselling. Her passion in education has led her to extensive experience in school as well as working with children and adolescents. She also has counselling and psychotherapy experience in USA and Thailand, where she handled cases of trauma, anxiety, as well as family and marital problems. Jessica is currently continuing her passion in education through teaching as a full-time lecturer in Psychology Department, Universitas Pelita Harapan, and is a board member of Indonesian Counseling Association (ICA).


Take the Bible Past the Finish Line

The humble beginnings of the Bible Society in 1804 was birthed after some Christians were moved by the stoic determination of 10 year old Mary Jones to possess a Bible. Since then, supporters of the 147 Bible Societies worldwide have helped to make the Bible available, accessible and credible to everyone.

Much work remains to be done, and The Bible Society of Singapore (BSS) and the rest of our sister societies in UBS continue to count on the help of our worldwide supporters who can contribute in the following areas:

Monetary Giving

Supporters who wish to give can pledge a single donation, give monthly, remember the Society in their will, give appreciated property or give through their workplace.

Sam Boring, an American, had been unable to tithe when he was younger. His career in the military had come to an abrupt end because of an injury which kept him from serving.

Eventually, the Boring family’s finances improved, and when they received an appeal to support a project run by the American Bible Society (ABS) through a gift annuity, they accepted.

“Everything comes from the Lord,” Sam Boring said. Despite the hardships faced, Sam and his wife, Thelma, gave generously. Thelma tithed “every penny she ever made,” says Sam.

Gift of Bibles

Supporters can help raise funds for the purchase of Bibles for children, adults and also audio Bibles or special Bibles for those with special needs.

Troy Love, a police officer, completed a 3,785 mile bike-ride across nine states to raise money for the purchase of Proclaimers, the audio Scripture players distributed by Faith Comes By Hearing (a partner of ABS), for the needy.

Troy’s goal to raise money for 1,000 Proclaimers came about when he realised how important these audio Scriptures are in reaching people around the world who cannot read.

His commitment and devotion to the Bible cause carried him through many trials on his 28 day long journey, and inspired Christians he met along the way to help raise funds for the Proclaimers.

“If you’re a willing vessel for Christ, He’s going to use you… If you’re going to live, don’t live for yourself. That’s when it changed for me- when I took the focus off myself… If you have a vision and a body to do it, get out and do it. Make a difference while you are here (on Earth).” - Troy Love 

Opportunities to Impact Lives

Supporters can partner with us to send a Bible-a-month to various countries in need; give the hope of God’s Word to those in need; feed the hungry souls in the more remote areas around the world; change children’s lives with food and Bibles; and support people in crisis.

Jenna Liew, a volunteer cyclist of the “She’s My Sister” programme run by ABS finally met Consolatta after pedalling 2,000 miles to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).  The latter was ravaged by roving militias and left for dead, instead becoming handicapped.  This kind of story is common amongst girls and women in DRC, and they need the reassurance of God’s Word and the love shown by His people to heal.

Jenna had been praying for Consolatta for one year and when they met, they connected emotionally and spiritually. God’s healing took place with Consolatta forgiving her tormentors and looking forward to her future, while Jenna felt that her encounter with Consolatta and the Congolese people had transformed her life so that she could devote herself fully to serving the Lord.

Supporters of BSS have chosen to contribute what they leave in their wills to further advocate our work. Gifts from legacy donors are highly significant, especially to an organisation like BSS which relies on the kindness and generosity of others to support its works. Many people who leave us legacy gifts have been impacted by the work of BSS and wish to secure the future of the Bible mission - you can read some of their stories here.

Elder Ong Teck Chye of Bethesda Frankel Estate Church greatly supports our work in China. He helps to organise Bible Mission Trips to China for his church members, and donates Bibles and audio Bibles, financial support, reading glasses and goodie bags to China.

Elder Ong enthused about the Bible cause of BSS in China, “We are impressed by the meaningful and purposeful outreach to the many believers in China. We count it a privilege and honour to be able to partner with BSS.” 

Sowers in Action

BSS also receives support in our “Sowers in Action” programme for volunteers, and has witnessed an increase of the volunteer pool.
