Jews 4 Jesus

In the Book of Romans, the Apostle Paul declares, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel”—but why was

other questions such as:

  • Why would Paul remind his readers that the Good News was first for Israel?

  • How are we to go about making the Gospel known?

Walking In Your Shoes

Hopes. Dreams. Families. Stories. Lives. They have them too.
Come, walk in their shoes.

"SOW CARE" is a ministry of The Bible Society of Singapore (BSS) that aims to reach marginalised and vulnerable communities in Singapore, such as guest workers.

In partnership with Hope Initiative Alliance and and some 70 other organisations, SOW CARE will be hosting ‘Walking in Your Shoes’—an exhibition that seeks to appreciate these guest workers who have left their homes in search of better opportunities for both their families and themselves.

Come and be challenged to walk in their shoes as you learn their struggles, and experience their everyday routines at work and in dormitories. Through the exhibition, you will also catch a glimpse of their lives beyond being guest workers in Singapore, and come to know their inspiring stories of hope, dreams and sacrifice.

Detailed Course Information

Sower Institute for Biblical Discipleship, in partnership with Trauma Healing Institute (THI), aims to provide leadership and services to churches and organisations using God’s word to bring healing and restoration to trauma survivors.

THI’s trauma healing programme provides basic mental health concepts with a biblical framework, using Scripture passages and composite real-life stories to help traumatised people connect the teaching with their circumstances.

Topics Covered
  • If God loves us, why do we suffer?
  • How can the wounds of our hearts be healed?
  • What happens when someone is grieving?
  • Taking your pain to the cross
  • How can we forgive others?
  • How can churches minister amidst various causes of trauma (domestic violence, suicide, etc.)?
  • How can we live as Christians amidst conflict?
  • Looking ahead

How the Programme Works
The programme consists of four components: Part I, a Practicum, Part II and a competency-based assessment.

1. Part I: Initial Equipping Session. Candidates attend a 3.5 day Initial Equipping session which allows participants to: explore their own trauma and bring it to Christ for healing; experience participatory learning; learn basic biblical and mental health principles related to trauma care; and develop plans for using what they have learned in their community. Trauma healing facilitators aim to ‘do no harm’ to those they help. To this end, participants are evaluated through a simple test.

2. Practicum. Participants return to their communities and apply what they have learned. They need to teach the five core lessons at least twice to groups of at least three people and send in reports on their activities.

3. Part II: Advanced Equipping Session. This 3-day session (conducted 6 or 9 months after the Initial Equipping session) focuses on consolidating the facilitator’s competencies in view of their practicum experience.

4. Competency-based assessment. Participants will be certified when they demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Able to manage personal well-being.
  • Able to work on a team.
  • Able to help traumatised people (listening, confidentiality, and so on).
  • Able to lead groups in a participatory way.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the content.

5. Certification and Deployment. At the end of the advanced session, participants are awarded a Certificate of Participation, or, for those who qualify, a facilitator-in-training Certificate. For some, these certificates may be awarded later when the competencies have been acquired.

Who should attend?
This programme is intended for Christians who would like to explore becoming a trauma healing facilitator so that they can provide basic care for those wounded by trauma and loss, or train others to do so.

Requirements:

  • Able to teach others in a community.
  • Able to attend all of the sessions.
  • Committed to helping trauma survivors.
  • Must be referred by church leadership or Christian organisation supervisor who must sign the Statement of Support.

Are We Reaching the Next Generation?

Our first NextGen Seminar “Are We Reaching the Next Generation?” was held on 31 March 2016 at St Andrew’s Cathedral. More than 130 people from over 55 churches attended to hear from our speakers.

The speakers shared valuable insights for those working with children and youth. Dr Norman Wong discussed the principles behind building a thriving youth ministry, while Charleston Lim from Heart of God Church explained how churches can release and empower youths to not just be leaders of tomorrow, but leaders of today. Pastor Sam Phun from River Community Church shared his insights on how his church trains children to minister to other children.

Are We Losing the Next Generation?

Our second NextGen Seminar “Are We Losing the Next Generation?” was held on 28 June 2016 with 110 people from over 50 churches gathering to learn how ministries and parents can effectively disciple the next generation.

Dr Calvin Chong (Singapore Bible College) gave a presentation on reaching and nurturing the next generation in a media-saturated world with many competing voices. He also explained how stories, rituals and relationships are being used to shape values and the worldviews of the next generation.

In the panel discussion that followed, Rev Christopher Chia (Adam Road Presbyterian Church) shared about his church’s work in building lifelong disciples from childhood to adulthood and beyond. Ps Joey Asher Tan (Grace Assembly of God) described how his youth ministry has transited to age-based niches instead of one ‘mass’ youth ministry. Christina Ong (Methodist TRAC, Children’s Ministry) talked about how she reduced the fallout when teens leave the children’s ministry by introducing a ‘tweens’ ministry. Finally, Yuen Chee Onn (Centre for Fathering) shared about the need for fathers to be properly equipped for their role and encouraged parents not to make the mistake of outsourcing the work of discipleship to church or youth ministry.

About the Speaker

Dr Calvin Chong resizedDr Calvin Chong is Associate Professor of Educational Studies at Singapore Bible College. His current teaching and research areas relate to youth, urban missions, and oral preference learners. Calvin is a board member of The Evangelical Fellowship of Singapore and HealthServe, a community development NGO.
